CATEGORY II: KNOWLEDGE & QURAN
TAJWEED [BROTHERS’ AND SISTERS’]
Brothers’ and sisters’ competitions will be separate.
The word “tajweed” means to improve, to make better. The purpose of the Tajweed competition is to encourage students to learn the recitation of the Qur’an in the manner practiced by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself and as is the right of the Book of Allaah: “Those to whom We have given the Book read it as it ought to be read” (Qur’an, 2:121)
Competition Guidelines:
1. Each participant is to come prepared with their choice of paragraph from the Qur'an and will be given a maximum of 4 minutes, so make sure your recitation ends within the time limit. Exceeding the time limit will result in deduction of points.
2. For Brothers Only: the Brother’s Tajweed finalists will present their tajweed in the opening tilawat at the closing ceremony on the evening of 10th February 2013.
3. Each participant is requested to bring their own copy of the Qur'an from which he/she would prefer to recite.
4. The brothers and sisters competitions will be held separately. No more than 2 male students and 2 female students from each team can register for this competition. This competition is NOT a team effort.
5. Each of the tajweed competitions (Brother’s and Sister’s) will have only one winner (first place).
Judging will be based on the participant’s pronunciation and chanting, i.e., the way to recite with a rhythm, described in the 4th verse of Surah al-Muzzamil in the Qur’an, based on the following categories:
1. Reading: Perfecting (mastering) the reading process without making mistakes in reciting the words and verses.
2. Adaa (Performance): This category is a combination of both the acquired skills that a person gains through training in the science of Tajweed, in addition to other qualities that Allah (S) in His infinite wisdom bestows upon whomsoever He pleases (such as the quality of one’s voice).
3. Tajweed (Recitation): Perfecting (mastering) the art of reciting the Qur’an by respecting the correct outputs of the alphabets, phonetics, timing, and applying all the rules of Tajweed.
4. Makhaaraij (Articulation): Perfecting the style of pronunciation of each Arabic letter and knowing where the sound of each letter comes from.
The results of the competition will be announced on the 2nd day of the tournament at the Closing Awards Ceremony.
