CATEGORY III: ARTICULATION & WRITING:
POETRY
This event has two parts:
· English: Spoken Word
· Urdu: Bait Bazi
Spoken Word:
Poetic expression has been a hallmark of Islamic tradition since the birth of the faith. In the days of Prophet Muhammed (SAW), Hassan bin Thabit (RA) recited poetry to the Prophet (SAW) himself. In recent times, we have seen a decline in this art form that moved the hearts of the faithful. While we are under constant vilification from external forces that wish to demonize our faith and our beloved Prophet (SAW), a Poetry competition would be an important forum in these trying times. It is about time we define ourselves and not allow others to define us with their scurrilous statements.
Competition Guidelines:
The following is a list of rules and procedures for Spoken Word. Failure to fulfil these obligations and/or any violation of them may result in point loss or disqualification from the tournament.
1. No more than 2 students from each team can register for this competition.
2. The performance should not exceed more than 5 minutes. Points will be deducted from the total score if the performance exceeds the allotted time.
3. Your piece of poetry MUST relate to this year’s theme (Revive the Light Within; Let the Change Begin).
4. No instruments can be used for the performance.
5. The competitors must submit two hard copies of their Spoken Word piece to the judges before they perform.
Bait Baazi - Iqbaleyaat
Why Iqbal?
According to Maulana Syed Sulaiman Nadwi, one of the events from Allama Iqbal's childhood that left ever-lasting marks played a significant role in laying down the foundation for all his works:
One morning when he was reciting the Quran as per routine his father came to him and said: "Son, what I want to say is this, whenever you read the Qur'an do so as if it were being revealed upon you, as if Allah SWT were conversing with you Himself!"
Dr. Iqbal said that his words impressed themselves upon his heart and he could still savor them. This was the seed sown in Iqbal's heart, which gave rise to the sturdy branches that spread across to all the corners of the world, in the form of his words.
Competition Guidelines:
1. Only two members from each team can register for this event.
2. The event will be conducted in the usual bait baazi format.
3. Please see that ONLY Urdu poetry of Allama Iqbal is allowed
4. The moderator will begin the event with a shair from Iqbal; the first team will give a shair which begins with the last alphabet of that shair.
5. Only one minute will be given to the team to come up with the shair.
6. If a team cannot give a shair in response, a point is deducted.
7. Failure to respond with proper shair twice will result in elimination of that team from the competition.
8. Please note that the shair should conform to norms of civility and educational institution.
9. Judging criteria will be based on the judging ballot attached below in case of a tie.
10. The judge’s decision will be final.
11. Misquoting a shair will result in deduction of points.
