CATEGORY III: ARTICULATION & WRITING:

ON-THE-SPOT ESSAY WRITING (URDU/ENGLISH)

Competition Guidelines:
No more than 2 students from each team can register for this competition. This competition is NOT a team effort. Each competitor must submit a separate piece of work.
1.     An essay may be written in either English or Urdu. Both will be judged separately.
2.     Competitors will be allowed to draw three topics on the day of the competition. The competitor may then choose one topic from among the three.
3.     Topics will be on basic Islamic subjects, general knowledge, and current event topics, all in some way or the other relating to the theme of the event (Revive the light within; Let the change begin)
4.     Competitors do not need to have an extensive knowledge of Islam to do well in this competition.
5.     The essay cannot be prepared beforehand, but must be extemporaneously composed (on the spot) at the time of drawing the topic.
6.     You may bring your own laptop.
7.     You will be given one hour and fifteen minutes to type or write an essay on the topic. The essay will be turned in to the judge when time is up. Time is short, so doing some background reading and pre-selecting verses and Ahadith to use would be a good idea!
8.     If any reference is used the competitor must cite the reference somewhere within his or her essay. If any part of your article has no reference, or if the judges cannot reproduce the reference easily, it, along with any arguments based on it will be considered void.
9.      Articles will be judged on how persuasive and interesting they are, along with flow, logic and spelling/grammar.
10.    While there is no minimum or maximum word limit, any article that is too long may cause judges to lose interest and deduct points.
11.    Along with earning your team points, winning articles will also be published in the SSS Bi-Annual Magazine Transcend!
12.    By entering this competition you are giving SIST permission to publish your work on its website and in all forms of promotional material, electronic, print or otherwise. You maintain copyright ownership to your work and are responsible for its content.
