CATEGORY I: THE ARTS
CALLIGRAPHY
Theme: Revive the Light Within: Let the Change Begin
Competition Guidelines:
1. No more than 2 students from each team can register for this competition. The competition is NOT a team effort. Each participant must submit a separate piece of work.
2. All artwork must be submitted on paper (there is no restriction on the type of paper used), which should not exceed 22 by 28 inches (standard chart paper size) or be less than the standard A4 size. The use of frames is optional and entirely up to the participants. SIST managers will not provide frames to display the artwork.
3. No more than 5 ayahs may be calligraphed. All final pieces must be labeled with the name of the competitor, institution and team.
4. The calligraphy piece MUST reflect this year’s SIST theme. All entries are to be submitted on the 1st of February (first day of event).
5. Participants’ artwork can include pictures or designs to compliment the calligraphic work (as long as they do not depict any human or animal figures); however, the calligraphic work should be the main focus of the artwork.
6. Any artwork that emphasizes designs or pictures over the calligraphy will not be eligible for the competition.
7. Participants should use known Arabic calligraphic scripts (e.g. Nastaleeq, Thuluth, Naskh, Kufic, Ruqa’h, etc.) for their artwork. The Calligraphic scripts must display uniformity, proportionality and consistency of lettering in accordance with the original Quranic text.
8. Participants will be expected to give a brief overview of their artwork to the judge or the event manager. The judge or event manager will also ask them questions pertaining to their artwork in order to ensure authenticity and that the participant is indeed the artist of the artwork presented.
9. The participants, and especially the winners, are encouraged to submit their artwork to the event managers after the competition is over if they are interested in having their work put on permanent display on the college premises. This is by no means mandatory, however.
10. Each competitor must display the following next to his or her piece on a separate piece of paper:
· Translation of the writing in the calligraphy piece.
· Short typed/written explanation of the calligraphy, not more than ONE page long (max. 500 words). The explanation should include the inspiration behind the meaning and form of the artist’s piece.
11. If any participant wants to take their artwork back with them, they should inform the event managers at least an hour before the competition is over; otherwise it will automatically be assumed that the participant has surrendered possession of their artwork to the SIST Committee.
No requests for returning of the artwork will be entertained after the competition is over. The work will be considered abandoned property and ownership rights will be transferred to the SIST Committee.
